The National Cancer Institute estimates more than 40,000 new cases of oral cancer are diagnosed each and every year. That number is growing, especially in mid ages and older patients due to smoking and environmental poisons. The sooner cancer is found, the better the odds become of overcoming the disease, and overcoming it without lifelong complications. Your City Square Dental dentist can perform the screening during your routine check- up or you can schedule your own appointment if you feel like something isn’t quite right or you have pain.
The oral cancer screening exam, held in office, will look for lesions or distinctive markings that are raised, such as abnormal white or red clusters of cells. The goal of the screening is to detect the oral cancer before symptoms appear or in the earliest stages so that it can be treated quickly and efficiently without putting too much of a damper on your day to day life.
The mouth and jaw have many different types of tissues and that means it is very susceptible to abnormal growths and cancer cells. They are relatively easy to see, as a healthy mouth is lined with a special type of skin that is smooth and pink.
If you are experiencing any alteration in appearance or these symptoms, it is best to get it checked out:
- Chronic hoarseness or scratchy throat
- Open sores in the mouth, gums, or lips
- Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or both.
- Chronic thickening of the saliva or mucus
- Reddish or white patches on the cheeks, gums, or roof of mouth
- Lumps inside cheek
- You easily bleed while brushing or flossing, and you brush every day
Do a thorough investigation of your lips, cheeks, palate, gums, and around the teeth, tongue, and even the back of your mouth into your throat. Pain isn’t always association with oral cancers, which is why it is important to look within the mouth. Oral cancer rarely has anything to do with cleanliness or hygiene, is it due to lifestyle choices and sometimes genetics.
At City Square Dental, we recommend that our patients do their own screening at least once a month. It isn’t difficult to do, and can easily be done while flossing. If you have any of the above symptoms or you have any questions, concerns, or problems, please do not hesitate to contact us at 289 521-2555. Our screenings are quick, painless, and will either set you at ease, or get you back on track to health. Remember that these cancers aren’t always hereditary and, if caught early, don’t have to change your life.
